Viborg’s new giant XL-BYG introduces digital price tags
In July 2022, the newly built XL-BYG Tømmergården opened in Viborg. With a 10,000 m2 store and thousands of products in stock, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the DIY store. As part of the store opening, the DIY store has also installed 8,500 digital price tags from Delfi Technologies.
The newly built timber store replaces the old XL-BYG at Randersvej in Viborg and has more than twice as much space as the old store. In 2016, XL-BYG in Viborg became part of Tømmergaarden, which today has 17 stores in North and Central Jutland.
"The construction industry in particular is currently exposed to rising and fluctuating purchase prices. Therefore, it was important for us to be able to maintain our earnings by easily changing our prices and price tags to an updated price."
The store in Viborg is the first DIY store where Tømmergården has chosen to implement digital price tags from Delfi Technologies. But right now they are also implementing the same solution at the DIY store in Nykøbing Mors. They are doing this as part of a digitization strategy, where they want to make their business more digital than it already is today.
– The construction industry in particular is currently exposed to rising and fluctuating purchase prices. Therefore, it was important for us to be able to maintain our earnings by easily changing our prices and price tags to an updated price, says Brian Kudsk, IT Manager at XL-BYG Tømmergaarden.
All 8,500 signs updated in the blink of an eye
The digital price signs at XL-BYG are powered by a button cell battery, which has a typical battery life of approximately 5 years. The signs are updated using a wireless antenna that sends product information and prices to all 8,500 signs in seconds. The software that controls all the signs is located in the cloud and is connected to the store’s ERP system. This way, the DIY store always has up-to-date prices and information on the signs.
Available in many different sizes, the signs can also have different types of layouts and divisions. In close collaboration with the IT Manager at XL-BYG Tømmergaarden, we Delfi Technologies developed some specific layouts and features that were particularly important for the business’ operations.
A big request from Brian was the ability to show missing product locations directly on the signs. With 8,000+ items in the assortment, this is an important factor in being able to find the item and actually know that it is available on the shelves. Therefore, a thick line is now displayed on the signs where there is no location associated with the item in the system.
Better overview of stock status in the store
Another important point for Brian was the ability to highlight items where the stock numbers in the systems do not match what is actually on the shelf or vice versa. Therefore, items that have a negative stock count have been made visible with two thin lines on the sign. This way, an employee can correct the systems by simply comparing the two lines on the sign with what is actually on the shelf.
For example, if there are ten packages of screws on the shelf but the sign shows minus, it will be corrected when an employee spots this during any trimming or replenishment near the shelf. This way, too many items are not ordered for the store through the automated ordering system.
– One of the areas where Delfi is particularly strong is with their new app. The app, which can be used on smartphones and handheld terminals, is used to assign new items to the digital price tags and to see the operational status of our signs and antennas. But also to switch between designs on the signs, for example when we need to highlight the location of a product with an up or down arrow,” explains Brian Kudsk.
An even better customer experience and service
Brian has also implemented a small triangle symbol on the sign that indicates that the item is either discontinued, not coming back, or otherwise tells the customer that when the shelf is empty, the space can be used for other items or to quickly give the customer an answer that the item is discontinued.
These various initiatives are extremely time-saving for store employees. Time they can now spend on giving their customers an even better experience and service.
